One by one, you call us home
I was pleased that this song was used as the memorial hymn at the SA-NT Convention of the LCA last weekend.
The convention was held at the Tatachilla College at McLaren Vale.
I told several people that, curiously, the song was originally written for the baptism of two children, Simon & Sarah. It was based on a line from John 10 ('the Good Shepherd' chapter): 'one by one he calls his own'. The tune is by English folk singer, Cyril Tawney. Many baptism songs are also excellent songs for funerals & this one, because of its chorus line, is more apt than most.
Like autumn leaves upon the ground
we know not where we should be bound.
The rain comes hard and night rolls in,
the sky is black and it's cold within.
And one by one you call us home.
